DIRTBOYART HISTORY

The year is 1984, the day is a Sunday, it’s night time and i am listening to the Annie Nightingale radio show. I think she was about two or three records in when she dropped a tune that would change my life. With the lyrics…

Step Step Step Step Step off because you gotta get lost because you know your soft uh-huh…

The track was by was by hip hop group Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and The Furious Five and it had me hooked straight away, this was Hip Hop Music and it had a whole culture of Rhyme, Dance and Art…. Graffiti Art.

Discovering Graffiti

I went out and started purchasing hip hop music and one of the first albums i bought was called Street Beats. It was a compilation album of Sugar Hill Hip Hop artists including the likes of West Street Mob, Treacherous Three and Grandmaster Melle Mel.

It was the cover that caught my eye though, it was covered in pictures of graffiti art, different styles, colors and shapes.

This album would become the template to my graffiti addiction i would soon go out and get myself pens and a pad to practice a tag as well as trying to replicate the graffiti pictures on the album cover.

It would not be long before i would move from pen and pad to spray cans and walls.

Not Just a Graffiti Artist

Somewhere down the path of life i was introduced to adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and a whole new world of art and design was opened up to me. Within a year of discovering these computer programs i had taught myself how to use them and had started designing flyers and posters.

I soon became fluent in Photoshop and Illustrator, one thing lead to another and i was asked by a friend of a friend if i could do some artwork for a rave he was organizing. I was soon knocking out artwork for tickets, flyers and posters.

Fast Forward to 2020

In the time that has passed i have found myself being involved in new ventures such as placing my artwork (old and new) onto canvas prints and selling them on as well as starting a organic clothing range with my graphics on.

The Website

Following on from my years of graphic art i thought i would put together a website, so you the beautiful people could perhaps gain some inspiration to help you along life’s little design path.

So take some time out of your day and have a little look through the graphic pieces of DirtboyArt a.k.a Simon.

Enjoy.
